As a fan of onion rings, I decided to try the ASDA Beer Battered Whole Onion Rings, and I must say, they exceeded my expectations for a frozen option. These onion rings deliver on flavour, texture, and convenience, making them a great addition to any meal or snack platter.
The packaging is simple and functional, with clear cooking instructions on the back. At 400g per bag, you get a generous portion, which is perfect for sharing or stocking up for multiple occasions. They’re made with whole onion slices, not minced or reformed onion, which is a big plus for me—there’s nothing better than biting into a proper ring of onion.
Cooking them is straightforward. I preheated my Air Fryer to 200°C, spread the onion rings out, and baked them for about 10 minutes. For extra crispiness, I turned them halfway through cooking. They came out perfectly golden and evenly cooked, with an enticing aroma of beer batter and roasted onions filling my kitchen.
The taste is where these onion rings truly shine. The beer batter is light and crispy, with a subtle malty flavour that adds depth without overpowering the sweetness of the onions. The onions themselves are tender and juicy, not mushy, which is often a risk with frozen options. You get a nice balance of sweetness from the onion and a savoury, slightly rich flavour from the batter.
What impressed me most was the texture. The batter crisps up beautifully in the oven, giving each bite a satisfying crunch. Unlike some frozen onion rings that can be greasy or soggy, these maintain their crispiness while still being light. The onions stay intact when you bite into them, which is a big deal for me—there’s nothing worse than the onion sliding out of the batter!
I served these as a side to Steak and Chips, and they complemented the meal perfectly. They’d also be a great addition to a party platter or as a snack with a dipping sauce like garlic mayo or barbecue. I tried them with sweet chilli sauce, and the combination was amazing.
Overall, ASDA Beer Battered Whole Onion Rings are an excellent frozen option that offers great value for money. They’re easy to prepare, taste fantastic, and deliver that perfect crunch you want from a good onion ring. Whether you’re serving them as a side, snack, or party treat, they’re sure to be a crowd-pleaser. I’ll definitely be buying these again!
