I picked up a pack of Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings from the local Co-Op because I was in a bit of a rush and couldn’t be bothered to make my own from scratch as they never turn out perfectly. Here’s how it went:
Cooking them was a breeze. I did the yorkshire puddings in the air fryer which only took 4 mins with no hassle. No mixing, no waiting for the batter to rest, none of that. They came out of the air fryer perfect and smelling nice. I was impressed with how even they cooked, no uneven patches or anything.
Now, onto the eating part. They’ve got a good crunch on the outside when you first bite in, but then it gives way to a softer, almost doughy inside. They’re not too salty, which is good ’cause you can then control the flavour with your gravy. However, if you’re eating them on their own, they might seem a tad bland.
I had them with a roast beef dinner. They held the Bisto Best gravy well, didn’t leak or get too mushy too fast, which is key for me. But here’s the thing, while they’re good, they lack that homemade touch, you know? There’s no irregular charm like when they rise all funny in the oven when you or someone else makes them with love.
The pack size was just right for my family. Nobody was fighting over the last one, but we didn’t have loads left over either. They’re pretty filling too, so two or three per person is enough, depending on how hungry everyone is.
Price-wise, I reckon they’re alright. You pay a bit extra for the convenience, but when you consider the time saved, it’s worth it sometimes. Plus, they’re often on offer, so you can stock up then.
They’re handy. There’s no doubt about that. If you’re having a roast dinner and you’ve got a million things to do, these will save you time. But if I’ve got the time, I might still go for making my own just for that homemade taste and feel.
In conclusion, Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings won’t disappoint, they do the job well, and they’re always there when you need them. But they won’t give you that ‘Sunday lunch at gran’s’ feeling, if you get what I mean. Still, I’ll keep them in my freezer for sure for times when i just can’t be bothered making my own.
