A premium offering: outdoor-bred British pork and smoked bacon form the base, with Barber’s mature cheddar cheese and a 3.5 % Marmite yeast-extract twist providing the flavour punch. The pastry is all-butter puff pastry topped with extra cheddar crumb. According to M&S this product is “perfect served hot or cold”.
On tasting, we opted to warm in an air fryer and the pastry was crisp and the filling delivered a rich savoury depth. The bacon and mature cheddar anchored the flavour nicely, while the Marmite gave a distinctive salty/umami note. I appreciated how the Marmite flavour was present but not overwhelming—it melded well with the smoked bacon and cheese rather than dominating.
The product did also hold up well when cold, which made it convenient. On the downside, the richness and saltiness were quite pronounced: if I were less fond of Marmite or heavy flavours I suspect these may be a bit much. Also, as with many premium sausage-rolls, the price is higher than standard supermarket options.
Overall I enjoyed them: they felt indulgent and well-made, with a clever flavour combination that elevated the classic sausage-roll format.
