Walking in, the garden unfolds like a theatrical production—each “room” feels like a new act in a global botanical performance. Much like other visitors, I was struck by how the designers cleverly concealed each themed section—Chinese, Egyptian, Italian, Himalayan—so that discoveries always feel fresh and unexpected.
Global garden journey: The Chinese Garden, with its red pagodas, serene koi ponds, and gentle waterfalls, truly captivated me. It’s no wonder many describe it as the “jewel” of the estate .
Stumpery and tunnels: The sunken stumpery—an enchanting labyrinth of mossy tree roots—and hidden tunnels and caves brought out my inner explorer. It reminded me of a Victorian-era adventure playground.
Seasonal surprises: Depending when you visit, you’re greeted by vibrant dahlias in early autumn, lush rhododendrons in late spring, and evergreen topiary all year round.
Get ready to walk: Be prepared for over 400 steps and uneven terrain—those with mobility issues (or prams) might find some areas challenging.
Crowd management: It can become quite busy during school holidays and weekends. I’d recommend a weekday visit if you prefer a quieter experience.
Staff and facilities: The staff were warm and knowledgeable—staff at the gift shop even recommended must-see spots. The café offered hearty snacks (especially vegan pasties and meat pies!), though my partner thought the tea-room prices were on the steeper side .
For families, this garden is a treasure trove: tunnels, rockeries, quiz trails, playgrounds… it kept my inner child (and likely many younger visitors!) endlessly entertained
Ambience: Magical and immersive
Accessibility: Beautiful but physically demanding
Family Experience: Exceptional
Value: Worth it, especially for National Trust members
