Atmosphere & Setting

The Bull is a beautifully preserved coaching inn located in the centre of Burford’s historic High Street. Dating back to the 15th century, it oozes period character — low beamed ceilings, flagstone floors, roaring fireplaces, and centuries-old charm at every turn. The ambience is warm and inviting, with an elegant yet homely feel that captures the spirit of the Cotswolds. The combination of rustic heritage and tasteful décor gives it timeless appeal, whether you’re stopping for a drink, a meal, or an overnight stay.

Rooms & Comfort

The rooms at The Bull combine traditional charm with modern comfort. Each one is individually styled with a blend of antique furniture, plush bedding, and contemporary touches such as high-quality mattresses, rainfall showers, and luxury toiletries. Some feature four-poster beds and garden views, adding a romantic touch. Despite the building’s age, soundproofing and heating are well managed, ensuring comfort throughout. Guests appreciate the balance of authenticity and modern convenience.

Food & Drink

The Bull’s restaurant and bar are standouts in Burford’s dining scene. The menu features elevated British classics with a modern twist — dishes such as braised short rib, pan-seared sea bass, and roasted cauliflower steak highlight both skill and flavour. The Sunday roasts are a highlight, known for generous portions and perfectly cooked meats. Breakfasts are equally praised, offering a full English, continental options, and locally sourced produce. The bar serves excellent wines, ales, and a range of craft gins, all enjoyed in a relaxed, fireside setting.

Service

Service at The Bull is polished and friendly, maintaining a balance between professionalism and genuine warmth. Staff are attentive and well-versed in both food and local knowledge, offering thoughtful recommendations without being overbearing. The reception team handle check-ins smoothly and are quick to assist with requests. Occasionally, peak dining times can result in slower table service, but the staff’s courteous approach keeps the experience positive.

Cleanliness & Maintenance

Given the age of the building, The Bull is remarkably well maintained. Rooms, dining areas, and restrooms are spotless, and the historical features are preserved with care. The upkeep of such an old inn is no small feat, yet it’s evident that attention to detail remains a top priority. Fresh flowers, polished wood, and clean linens reinforce a sense of understated luxury throughout.

Value for Money

While pricing reflects its boutique status, The Bull offers strong value for the quality of experience it provides. Guests feel that the level of comfort, atmosphere, and food quality more than justify the rates. Whether visiting for dinner or an overnight stay, it delivers the kind of heritage-rich experience that’s well worth the cost for those seeking a true taste of the Cotswolds.

Description

BULL Burford is a 16th‐century coaching inn turned boutique hotel, nestled on the High Street in the picturesque town of Burford, Oxfordshire, often called the “gateway to the Cotswolds.”

Owned and extensively reimagined by PR strategist Matthew Freud, BULL opened its doors in its new incarnation around 2023, after an ambitious renovation of this Grade II listed building.

With just 18 rooms, each space offers modern luxury balanced with historic charm—original beams, fireplaces, thoughtfully chosen art (including pieces by the likes of Banksy, Dalí, Damien Hirst), and soft ambient lighting, which make the experience intimate and visually rich.

Dining is a major draw:

  • The main restaurant, Bull, led by chef Adam Harris, works closely with high-quality producers across the UK to deliver inventive and flavourful cuisine.
  • Wild, a more casual, elemental culinary venue, features cooking over open fire, live charcoal, and seasons & ingredients drawn from the local landscape.

The atmosphere at BULL is deliberately sociable and curated: guests are encouraged to share communal dining, make use of a self-serve pantry (filled with snacks, drinks, books), and engage in a programme of activities—yoga, photography, flower-picking, book clubs, for example—that make it more than just a place to stay.

Though rooted in history, with a façade and bones dating back centuries, inside BULL feels contemporary and full of surprises—hidden wine cellars, unconventional art placements, design twists in unexpected corners.

Guests often praise its attention to detail, the warmth of service, the high quality of food, and the balance between luxury and relaxation.
