After hearing whispers about Manchester’s latest hotspot, Sexy Fish, I finally ventured out to see what all the fuss was about. Located in the heart of Spinningfields, Sexy Fish Manchester isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience that challenges your senses and expectations.
Walking into Sexy Fish, the first thing that strikes you is the sheer opulence of the place. The design is audacious, with Frank Gehry’s iconic fish lamps casting a soft, otherworldly glow over the bar area, and Damien Hirst’s art installations adding to the surreal atmosphere. The mermaids, both in sculpture and live performances, add a touch of fantasy, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a scene from a high-budget music video. The music, a blend of high-energy club beats, sets the tone for what feels more like an exclusive club than a traditional dining venue (This is only Fri and Sat night from 10pm).
The service at Sexy Fish was a mixed bag. On one hand, there was an undeniable charm in the servers’ attentiveness, especially with the table service which felt personalized and efficient. However, the overall experience was marred by a bit of a rushed feeling, especially with the two-hour dining limit which seemed more about turnover than guest comfort. Despite this, when the service was good, it was excellent, with staff making the evening memorable.
Let’s talk about the star of the show – the food. Starting with the bottomless sushi station during their Sexy Sunday Brunch was a revelation. For those willing to splurge, this is where the experience truly shines. The sushi was fresh, beautifully presented, and the variety was impressive. From sashimi to nigiri, each piece was a testament to quality, though the price reflects this luxury.
The main courses didn’t disappoint either. The salt and pepper squid was surprisingly light with a perfect crisp, elevated by a zesty citrus and chili dust. However, it’s the dessert that lingers in memory – the chocolate fondant was a delightful spectacle and taste sensation.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – the cost. Sexy Fish Manchester isn’t just dining out; it’s an investment in an experience. For four people, expect a bill that can easily climb over £700, especially if you indulge in drinks like the recommended Ruinart champagne which is £120 a bottle, (the most expensive, the Dom Perignon Mathusalem 6l is £12k a bottle). While the service charge felt a bit presumptuous, given the mixed service experience, the overall quality of food and ambiance might just make you find the expense justified, if you’re in the mood for luxury.
