I finally made it to The Farmer’s Dog just outside Burford — and honestly, it was worth every mile. If you’re a fan of Clarkson’s Farm, this place feels like walking straight onto the set, ( maybe I was lucky as I saw Alan, Kaleb and Jeremy) but with better food and fewer broken tractors.
The building itself is gorgeous—classic Cotswold stone, big wooden beams, and that perfect mix of countryside charm and modern comfort. We were welcomed with a smile, and yes, even the dog got a treat at the bar (nice touch).
We had lunch in the main pub, and it was fantastic. I went for the steak & ale pie with Hawkstone gravy, which was rich, flaky, and just what you want on a chilly day. My partner had the fish & chips—perfectly crispy with thick-cut chips and proper tartar sauce. We shared a rhubarb crumble for dessert, which came with clotted cream. Comfort food done really, really well.
The drinks were all British, which I found genuinely impressive. I had a pint of Hawkstone Lager (smooth and refreshing), and we both tried their house-made soft drinks—no Coca-Cola in sight, which is kind of the point.
What really stood out, though, was the atmosphere. It was busy, but not chaotic. Locals chatting at the bar, couples having lunch, families with well-behaved kids and dogs—it felt like a real community pub, not a gimmicky celebrity spot.
We also checked out the tented bar and butcher shop (yes, there’s an actual butcher on site), and grabbed some Diddly Squat merch on the way out. Very on brand, but also genuinely good quality.
Beautiful setting – Classic Cotswold charm with a stylish rustic interior.
Top-notch food – British pub classics done properly with quality ingredients.
All-British menu – Everything (yes, everything) is UK-sourced.
Dog-friendly – Pups get treated like regulars.
Unique extras – On-site butcher, merch stand, and pop-up kitchen.
Great atmosphere – Lively but welcoming, with friendly staff and service.
Hard to get a table – Booking ahead is almost essential.
Can get busy – Expect a wait or a crowd, especially at peak times.
Remote location – You’ll need a car (and maybe a satnav) to find it.
No international staples – Don’t expect Coke, Pepsi, or foreign imports.
Bit pricey – Quality’s high, but so are some of the prices.
