A destination for decent fish and chips

The Atmosphere:

The shop exudes a quaint, traditional charm that you might expect from a classic British chippy. The decor is simple yet warm. The staff behind the counter were friendly, offering a cheerful greeting that immediately made me feel welcome.

We opted to have the fish and chips:

Let’s dive into the chips first. I’ve had my fair share of chips across the UK, and these were good. They were thick-cut, perfectly golden with a crispy exterior that gave way to a fluffy interior. There’s something about the way they’re fried here; the oil temperature must be just right to achieve that ideal balance of crispiness and softness. They were seasoned just enough, enhancing their natural potato flavour without overpowering it.

The fish was equally impressive. Opting for the cod, I found it to be of decent quality. The batter was light, crisp, and not overly greasy, which is a testament to their frying technique. The fish inside was flaky, moist, and had that wonderful freshness that indicates it’s been handled well. The portion size was generous, too, which is always a plus when you’re craving a hearty meal.

Service:

Service at Harbour Fish and Chip Shop was brisk and efficient. Despite there being a small queue, I didn’t feel rushed or ignored. My order was prepared quickly, handed over with a smile in a nice thick paper bag.

Value for Money:

Considering the location of being in Oxfordshire the quality and portion size, I found the pricing to be quite reasonable if not on the slightly expensive side. You get what you pay for, and in this case, it’s a meal that not only fills you up but also satisfied the palate.

Overall

If you’re in Carterton or just passing through, I highly recommend stopping by The Harbour Fish and Chip Shop. The chips and fish here are a lovely reminder of why British fish and chips are loved worldwide. It’s comfort food at its best, served with a side of genuine hospitality.
